Support for Carers

Introduction to Carer Support

Providing care to a person living with MND can be physically, emotionally and psychologically difficult.

Whilst many carers highlight the privilege and reward of being able to care for a loved one, it is important that carers also receive the information, support and assistance they need to manage the caring role.

Andrea Salmon coordinates the MND Carer Support Program and you'll meet her at the programs we hold for carers and family members. All our programs are free of charge unless otherwise stated and open to family members of registered clients.

Kitchen Table Conversations

Kitchen Table Conversations are monthly gatherings that provide a safe space for carers to ask questions, share experiences, learn from each other and support each other. Hosted by Andrea Salmon, Carer Program Coordinator at MND Victoria along with Lynette and Karl, past carers, these conversations are run monthly via Zoom on the:

  • 1st Friday of the month at 2:00 pm
  • NEW 2nd Monday of the month at 2.00pm – MEN ONLY Kitchen Table Conversation, and
  • 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm

Come once or come every month! These Kitchen Table Conversations encourage carers to learn, listen, and to have a laugh or a cry - just like we would if we were sitting around a kitchen table.

We hope to see you there!

Register to attend by emailing carer.support@mnd.org.au or calling our office on 03 9830 2122.

About the Carer Lunch Program

MND Victoria is running Carer Wellness Programs for our carers to give them some tools for looking after themselves while caring for a loved one. The events are also an opportunity to relax and connect with other carers.

This is a free, fully catered event and is open to all current carers of people registered with MND Tasmania.

We welcome any current carer to register to attend this program, it is open to everyone, regardless of their postcode.

Who is a 'carer'?

You may see yourself as a partner, relative or friend, not a ‘carer’, when supporting someone you love and care for with motor neurone disease (MND). However, as a 'carer', you can access help from care services as care needs increase.

If you need assistance arranging for someone to be with your loved one to enable you to attend the event, speak to your MND Advisor/Support Coordinator.

Read, watch and listen to some useful resources all about carers and caring.

MND National Youth Hub is operated by MND NSW and provides information, support services and tools for young carers aged 5 to 24 years old.

The National Youth Hub is a space for young carers to chat, share, and connect about their experiences with providing care for someone with motor neurone disease. Young carers play a big part in the journey of someone diagnosed with MND, and they need a robust support network.

For more information on the National Youth Hub, please contact us at info@mnd.org.au or call us on 1800 777 175.

You can visit MND New South Wales website for additional information.

Carer’s Alert Thermometer (CAT)

10 short questions that ask you whether you need any support across two main areas of caring;

  • support needed to provide care, and
  • support needed for your own health and well-being.

The CAT is an evidence-based alert tool designed to identify the needs of people who are providing support to a family member or friend at home as an unpaid carer. Originally developed for use in the UK with unpaid carers providing end of life care at home it is now being used with carers who are providing support to patients with a range of long-term and progressive conditions, as well as those receiving palliative and end of life care.

Your responses to this questionnaire will go directly to the Carer Support Program team who will respond with suggestions and guidance for where to get the information and support identified by your answers.

But don’t forget, you can also ask your MND Advisor and Support Coordinator these questions as they will have loads of resources ready to offer you.
